Right from it’s opening, a riff on the music video that serves as its inspiration, it’s clear that Baby Driver marches to the beat of a very different drum.

(You can even listen to that wrong opinion on the McYapandfries movie podcast recorded directly after the screening here). Every film after that has a lot to live up to.Īt first, I didn’t think Baby Driver quite measured up.Ī combination of unrealistic expectations and unfamiliarity with some of the soundtrack, left me somewhat disappointed the first time I took Baby Driver for a spin. Outside the unique circumstances, I absolutely adored that movie’s style, humour and music. I’ve loved every one of his projects to various degrees, with the absolute pinnacle being when I attended a special preview screening of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World during San Diego Comic Con in 2010, introduced by the director and his cast. Was he slow?Įver since I stumbled across Spaced back in 1999, I’ve been a huge fan of Edgar Wright. This review was very nearly completely different. Once I got over myself however, I saw it for what it was: a whip-smart thrilling and most of all fun American-crime-drama-cum-car-chase musical that I couldn’t help but tap my feet in time to.

The World as well as the amazing TV show Spaced, I naturally had high expectations for his latest film, Baby Driver. He literally has to soundtrack his entire life, because he can’t really do things without the right music playing. As a die-hard fan of Edgar Wright’s movies, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End and Scott Pilgrim vs. It becomes a security blanket, and then a full-blown obsession. But the other aspect of that is to listen to music, to drown out the whine. It has the effect of him not wanting to talk too much, because people with hearing defects can feel more self-conscious talking. Details Edgar, “Baby has this hearing defect, tinnitus, a whine in his ear caused by being in a car crash when he was young.

In regards to why music plays so important a role in this film, part of it is that he enjoys cranking up the sound on his favorite songs while he’s driving, but at the same time it’s a means of dealing with a personal tragedy. And also he’s a great actor and a nice guy.” His life is completely governed by music and listening to the rhythm of the music he’s listening to, and Ansel has a dance background. “Which the lead character in the movie is. “Ansel is obsessed with music,” the director corrects. There was something so beguiling and hypnotic about watching a 21-year-old actor play along to some jazz from the ‘50s. One of my favorite scenes with Ansel, he has his headphones in and he’s listening to Dave Brubeck, and starts playing piano on the table. Says Edgar, “The thing that really charmed me about him was the fact that he’s very musical, and he can play lots of instruments. Luck was definitely running the other way when actor and director first met. At some point, Baby’s luck is gonna run out.” The storm clouds have been gathering during the movie. Then very quickly, with subsequent situations, things start to go wrong, and very visceral consequences start to bear down. The opening chase is sort of positioned as a clockwork act of precision. Writer/director Edgar Wright sums up Baby’s changing luck by commenting, “The movie is structured so it opens with the dream of being a getaway driver, and very quickly turns into the nightmare of being a criminal.
